Japan, Azerbaijan Hold Talks on Strengthening Energy Cooperation

(MENAFN) Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov held talks in Tokyo on Wednesday focused on expanding cooperation in the energy sector and broader economic ties.

According to reports, Motegi highlighted Japan’s intention to strengthen collaboration in energy, including crude oil supplies, citing the impact of ongoing instability in the Middle East. A statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry noted this position.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing energy security and ensuring a stable flow of Azerbaijani crude oil, according to a joint statement.

Japan, which depends heavily on energy imports from the Middle East, has become more exposed to supply disruptions in oil and liquefied natural gas following the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict in late February, which significantly affected shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

The two ministers also agreed to expand cooperation beyond energy, including economic relations, decarbonization efforts, and improved connectivity through the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, as well as progress in ongoing negotiations on an investment agreement.
